This congregation has had several names, locations, and synod affiliations. Located in downtown Houston, it was organized in 1851. There was a split in the congregation resulting in the formation in 1879 of the Deutsche Evangelisch – Lutherische Dreineinigkeits Gemeinde of Houston (German Evangelical – Lutheran Trinity Church of Houston). It was also called the Central Congregational Church of Houston. First Evangelical Lutheran became an ELCA congregation about 2002 but withdrew in 2010 and joined the North American Lutheran Church Synod. In 1966 the archival records for Baptism, Communion, Marriage, and Funeral records and Church Council minutes of First Evangelical Lutheran Church were microfilmed. The Clayton Library has one copy, the original documents and one copy were returned to the church archives, and a third copy is in the Texas Room of the Houston Public Library. |
