Notes |
From the Foreward of "Glimpses" -- The lines appearing on the cover of this little book are known and loved throughout Japan, for in them the Japanese find a perfect expression of "Yamatogokora--Japan's Heart." They were written in the eighteenth century by the poet Norinaga Moto[ri]. The following is a free rendering of the verses: "In the mountain cherry-blossom, fragrant in the morning air and suffused with sun-rise glow--There is embodied the spirit of Japan!" |
