This box contains 20 historical documents taken from a scrapbook of photos and printed material concerning Grace Lutheran Sanatorium, a tuberculosis rehabilitation facility on the west side of San Antonio, Texas, and later Lutheran General Hospital. Included are newspaper articles, magazine articles, invitations, bulletins, etc. detailing the life of Grace Lutheran Sanatorium and one of its founders, Herman O. Ochs. The scrapbook was dismantled due to its deteriorating state. See Finding Aids for a complete list of documents in this box. |

1. A four-square of the Grace Lutheran Sanatorium Christmas Seals, 45th year, 1958. 2. An invitation to the ground breaking ceremonies for the 1st expansion of Grace Lutheran Sanatorium and Hospital, June 29, 1958. 3. A newspaper article from the San Antonio Express-News, dated 6-16-56, announcing the installation of the Rev. L.C. Johnson as the new chaplain at Grace Lutheran Sanatorium. 4. An invitation to the opening and Open House of the 48-bed addition at Grace Lutheran Sanatorium and Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 13, 1959. 5. A newspaper article with photo of the graound-breaking ceremony at Grace Lutheran Sanatorium, [June 29, 1958], Rev. A.E. Rode and Herman Ochs are pictured. 6. An announcement of the Christmas Seal 1957, the sale of which benefited Grave Lutheran Sanatorium and Hospital. Included here are two of the seals from 1957. On the reverse is a partial newspaper picture of the ladies in charge of the 1958 tea announcing the start of the sale of the 1958 Christmas Seals. 7. An article by Herman Ochs, Grace Lutheran Sanatorium president and acting superintendent, on the 35th Anniversary of the its founding September 15,1913-1948 encouraging support of the Christmas Seal program and the overall work of the Sanatorium and Hospital. 8. An early map of the west side of San Antonio, Texas, pinpointing the location of Grace Lutheran Sanatorium on Zaarzamora St. showing its location as 2 1/2 miles west of City Hall. 9. A bulletin of the Order of Service for the installation of the Rev. L.C. Johnson to become the Chaplain and Administrative Assistant to Dr. Hermon Ochs at Grace Lutheran Sanatorium, [June 17, 1956]. --On the reverse side is a partial newspaper article dated Sunday, April 20, 1958, announcing the expansion of Grace Lutheran Sanatorium and its purpose to move toward caring for all types of convalescent patients and to include a geriatrics research center. A fund drive of $250,000 was also announced. 10. A San Antonio Express News article dated Sept. 12, 1959, announces an Open House at the 48-room addition to Grace Lutheran Sanatorium and Hospital which coincied with the 46th anniversary of the institution, Sept. 13, 1913. 11. A bulletin of the Opening Ceremony, Grace Lutheran Hospital, dated Sept. 13, 1959. 12. A newsletter from St. John's Lutheran Church, San Antonio, Texas, titled "St. John's Tidings" announcing the opening of the new 48-bed unit at Grace Lutheran Sanatorium and Hospital, dated the week of Sept. 13, 1959. 13. Order of service bulletin of the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the first new unit of the expanded building program at Grace Lutheran Sanatorium and Hospital, dated June 29, 1958. --On the reverse side if a San Antonio Light newspaper article dated Friday, September 26, 1958, telling about the kickoff luncheon for advance gifts for the expansion of Grace Lutheran Sanatorium and Hospital. 14. Newspaper article from the San Antonio Express dated Feb. 8, 1953 titled "Ochs Retires After 50 Years." The article tells of the work of Herman Ochs in the San Antonio community at a luncheon held in his honor at the St. Anthony Hotel. 15. Three pages of the lead article in the Capital University Bullein, Columbus, Ohio, dated April 1939, titled "Grace Lutheran Sanatorium Crusades Against the White Plague" tells the history of the founding of the sanatorium and commends its first superintendent, Dr. Paul F. Hein, '85 graduate of Capital Univ. 16. Three pages of a slide show script prepared by Herman Ochs, date unknown but possibly for the 35th anniversary, details the history of the Sanatorium when it was purchased in 1912, its purpose, current operation, grounds, staff, etc. It reveals many small details about the workings of the sanatorium. Slides are lost to history; however, the slide descriptions point to many of the photographs in the scrapbook from which this narrative was taken. 17. Article in the newsletter "Views Lutheran General Hospital" dated Spring 1971, Vol. 7, No. 1 announcing the death of Herman H. Ochs: "Lutheran General's Beloved Founder, Herman H. Ochs, Dies 1880--1970" 18. Newspaper article dated March 4, 1965, in the San Antonio Light congratulating both Emery Varga and Herman Ochs on their service to Joske's, a Wolff and Marx store. Both men are pictured. 19. An article in the San Antonio Express, dated Dec. 30, 1951, titled "50-Year Career Wins Ochs Trip to Germany" to attend the Lutheran World Federation meeting in Hanover, Germany in the summer of 1952. "He was the only lay delegate present." 20. The cover page from the LUTHERAN STANDARD, Vol. XCIX, Number 19, May 10, 1941, shows a photo of the entrance to Grace Lutheran Sanatorium, San Antonio, Texas. On the reverse side is a portion of the article about Grace Sanatorium; of particular interest is the portion of the article under the photo of the Walter E. Zollinger Memorial Bungalow which describes the premises of the Sanatorium in 1941, including the existence of "...19 attractive bungalows for patients" in the Spanish style. 21. Email correspondence with Sarah Reveley, daughter of Dr. James Reveley. Dr. Reveley was a TB patient at Grace Sanatorium in 1960. Sarah's email request for photos of the facility led to her telling her father's tragic story. 4 pages. 22.
