Notes |
Pastor Kleis established a congregation two miles northeast of northeast of New Braunfels in the settlements of Neighborsville and Hortontown. He established a fachwerk church building in Neighborsville in 1851 named First Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Martin. This building is believed to be the oldest Lutheran Church in Texas and is still standing located in the congregation's cemetary in the area originally known as Hortontown. It is a Texas historical landmark. CA 1900 St. Martin was served by German speaking pastors who were of the Evangelical or Reformed faith because there was a limited supply of pastors in the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Texas. Soon services were discontinued and members joined the German speaking congregations of Friends and the Free Protestant Church in New Braunfels. Records from St. Martin's can be found at First Protestant Church of New Braunfels. The original of some of the copies in this collection can be found in the Ziehe Collection 2003.130.12 in FBox 62, Folders 1-7. |
