Description |
3 photos of the vessel "Totol" [Messenger]--supply boat to the New Guinea mission--captained by Theodore Radke, ca. 1930. This vessel was purchased with funds from Sunday school children in the U.S. |
Notes |
"Lying on the bottom of one of Nagada's lagoons is the good ship 'Totol' which was built in Hongkong in 1936 under the personal supervision of Captain Radke. Before it was finally hid in the plantation by its master it had made several emergency runs, evacuating people from New Britain Island at the approach of the Japanese fleet. It does our hearts good to listen to the tributes paid locally to the heroic deeds of our faithful martyred brother, Ted Radke [husband of Emma {Engeling} Radke]. At low tide the mast of the ship protrudes from its watery grave to remind us that our bombed mission vessel, so vital to the transportation of missionaries and supplying of stations, must be replaced. The 'Totol' (messenger) was purchased and named by our Sunday school children at home." from WE FOUND THEM WAITING by Theodore P. Fricke, page 50. |
